The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has summoned BJP leader Mukul Roy in connection to the Narada sting operation case, sources said.

Reportedly, a representative of Mukul Roy met the CBI officials on Friday seeking more time to appear before the agency for questioning. However, the agency directed the BJP leader to join the investigation tomorrow on Saturday. The agency, in recent, was facing allegations of 'going soft' on the leader since the time he joined BJP after quitting TMC. Mukul Roy was earlier examined by the CBI on August 28, 2019.

Mukul Roy has been asked by the CBI to present himself before the agency at the Kolkata office. The probe agency is likely to confront Mukul Roy with arrested IPS officer SHM Mirza who has been granted into CBI's custody till Monday.

According to sources, SHM Mirza along with many leaders of Trinamool Congress was allegedly seen taking cash in Narada sting operation case. Mukul was then leader of TMC.

Mirza, according to sources, was unable to satisfy the CBI during the questioning and was unable to explain accepting cash. Sources also say that during the investigation and questioning of other suspects and witnesses in the case, Mirza was prima facia found to be involved in the alleged illegality.

The statement of Mathew Samuels, CEO of Narada News, also provided vital information against Mirza.

The Narada sting operation was allegedly carried out in 2014 but the video footage surfaced in 2016, just before the West Bengal Assembly elections. Many leaders of West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee are also under the scanner of CBI.

It was learnt that the prosecution sanction has been sought against Saugata Roy, Kakoli Ghosh and Prasun Banerjee and West Bengal Minister Suvendu Adhikari.

According to the sources, the investigation agency will file a chargesheet, naming all the four leaders as soon as the sanction is accorded by the Lok Sabha speaker. The agency, sources said, may not name Mukul Roy, who joined BJP in 2017 after quitting TMC.

All four leaders were named as accused in the CBI FIR filed on April 16, 2017 after nearly a month-long preliminary inquiry on the orders of Calcutta High Court.

In its FIR, the CBI has alleged that sting operation shows Roy, Ghosh and Adhikari accepting Rs five lakh each from the person posing as a representative while Prasun Banerjee could be seen receiving Rs four lakh for helping in a business venture.
